Removing a tree is a bigger decision than most people expect — and, done properly, a bigger job than it looks from the ground. After years removing trees across Wellington’s hills and tight sections, here’s what we think every homeowner should know before booking the work.
When is removal actually the right call?
Not every problem tree needs to come out. Before recommending removal we look at whether pruning, crown reduction or remedial surgery could solve the issue instead. Removal makes sense when a tree is dead, structurally unsound, diseased beyond recovery, causing damage, or simply in the wrong place for a build or development.
What safe removal involves
On open ground we may fell a tree in one controlled drop. But on Wellington’s steep, built-up sections we more often dismantle the tree piece by piece, lowering limbs on ropes so nothing lands on a roof, fence or garden. That takes training, rigging and experience.

Choosing the right arborist
Ask about qualifications and insurance, and make sure you get a clear written quote. A qualified arborist will happily explain why they’re recommending a particular approach — and whether your tree could be saved rather than removed.
